Matsumoto Castle is well connected to the rest of Japan by train and is an easy addition to a Central Japan or Nagano itinerary. This guide covers every route — from Tokyo, from Nagano, from Hakuba, and the final stretch from Matsumoto Station to the castle gate. Getting to Matsumoto City
🚄 From Tokyo (Shinjuku)
Super Azusa limited express → Matsumoto Station
Journey time: approximately 2 hours 30 minutes direct. No transfer required.
The Super Azusa departs Shinjuku Station roughly every hour. The journey passes through the Kofu Basin and Suwa Lake before arriving into the Matsumoto Basin with the Alps becoming visible on the approach.
Reserve a seat in advance on the JR website or at a Midori no Madoguchi counter. A reserved seat on the Super Azusa is included in the standard limited express fare — no separate supplement required.
Fare: Approximately ¥6,600–7,200 one way including limited express supplement. Japan Rail Pass holders travel free on this service.
🚄 From Tokyo (via Nagano — Faster but One Change)
Hokuriku Shinkansen → Nagano, then JR Shinano → Matsumoto
Journey time: approximately 2 hours total (1h 20min to Nagano, 45 min onward).
Marginally faster than the Super Azusa but requires one transfer at Nagano Station. Worth considering if your Japan Rail Pass includes the Shinkansen and you want to minimise total travel time. If you're visiting Matsumoto as a day trip from Tokyo, the Super Azusa direct is usually more comfortable.
🚂 From Nagano City
JR Shinano limited express → Matsumoto Station
Journey time: approximately 45 minutes direct.
Departs Nagano Station roughly every hour. If you're booking a full-day guided tour from Nagano — Castle + Kamikochi — pickup is available from Nagano Station at 08:15, so you won't need to purchase a separate train ticket.
Fare: Approximately ¥2,310 one way including limited express supplement. Japan Rail Pass valid.
🚌 From Hakuba
Alpico bus or taxi → Matsumoto Station (then walk/bus to castle)
Journey time: approximately 60–90 minutes depending on season and road conditions.
The Alpico express bus connects Hakuba and Matsumoto Station, with departures several times daily. In winter the Hakuba Liner ski resort bus also connects the valley. Taxis from Hakuba to Matsumoto City are available but expensive (approximately ¥15,000–20,000). 🏔 From Kamikochi
Bus → Shin-Shimashima → Matsumoto Dentetsu → Matsumoto Station
Journey time: approximately 1 hour 30 minutes.
Kamikochi is car-free; all access is by bus to Shin-Shimashima, then the Matsumoto Dentetsu (Alpico) railway into Matsumoto. This is the return leg of the Castle + Kamikochi full-day tours. If you're doing those tours independently, budget 90 minutes from the Kamikochi bus terminal back to Matsumoto Station.
Day trip from Tokyo? The Super Azusa at approximately 07:00 from Shinjuku arrives Matsumoto ~09:30, giving you a full day at the castle and city before the last return train at around 19:00 from Matsumoto. Comfortable as a day trip; better as an overnight if you plan to add Kamikochi.
From Matsumoto Station to the Castle
Matsumoto Castle is 1.2 km north of JR Matsumoto Station — an easy, flat walk through the city centre. Three options:
🚶 Walking (15 minutes)
Exit via the Castle Exit (East Exit) of Matsumoto Station and head north. The route passes through a covered shopping arcade, then along a pleasant street with cafes and soba restaurants. Signs in English point toward the castle throughout. The walk is flat, straightforward, and a good warm-up before climbing six floors of steep stairs.
🚌 Town Sneaker Bus (10 minutes)
The Town Sneaker North Course departs from the bus terminal adjacent to Matsumoto Station and stops at the Matsumoto Castle/City Hall stop. Runs regularly throughout the day. Fare: ¥200 per journey, or purchase a day pass (¥500) if you plan to visit multiple Matsumoto attractions. In rain or with luggage, this is the most convenient option.
🚕 Taxi (under 10 minutes)
Taxis queue at the Castle Exit taxi rank. Fare: approximately ¥800–1,000. Quick and useful if you're running late for a timed entry slot or have heavy bags. The castle has no luggage storage — leave large bags at Matsumoto Station coin lockers before heading out.

IC card: Load an IC card (Suica, Pasmo, or Icoca) before leaving Tokyo or Nagano — it works on the Town Sneaker bus, Matsumoto Dentetsu, and most local vending machines. Contactless payment is not yet universal at smaller Matsumoto restaurants.
Luggage at Matsumoto Station: Coin lockers are available at Matsumoto Station in several sizes. Leave large bags before walking to the castle — there is no storage at the castle site. Lockers typically cost ¥300–700 per day depending on size.
Japan Rail Pass: Valid on the Super Azusa and JR Shinano. Not valid on the Matsumoto Dentetsu (the private railway to Shin-Shimashima). Check the latest JR Pass coverage before purchasing, as validity rules can change.
Onward from Matsumoto: After your castle visit, Matsumoto connects onward to Nagano (45 min), Shinjuku (2.5 hrs), Nagoya via the Chuo Line (2.5 hrs via Shiojiri), and Shin-Shimashima for Kamikochi (35 min Matsumoto Dentetsu + bus). Matsumoto functions well as a hub for Central Japan.
